DaJourney plans to go harder following Sterling win
While growing up in the district of Spalding in Clarendon, opportunities in music were limited for DaJourney. It wasn’t until he migrated to Canada 16 years ago that the musical tides began to turn for him in gospel music circles.
“I was born and raised in Spalding but I had to leave because of the lack of opportunities. For me, relocating to Canada was about opportunity and I found it there,” DaJourney disclosed in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.
He continued, “I was able to do things when I found my passion in music. I was able to push forward.”
A self-taught mixing and recording engineer, DaJourney described his musical journey.
“The journey has been great and it’s been fast. Whatever God has for you, is for you. Music has always been a thing for me from growing up in the church in Jamaica. I attended Baptist church and when I moved to Canada, I was able to invest more into what I was doing including buying studio equipment,” DaJourney explained.
At the recently held Sterling Gospel Music Awards, DaJourney’s collaboration with Florida-based recording artiste Sone G, titled Sweet Ehh, won the award for Collaboration of the Year. It was also nominated for Video of the Year.
DaJourney is ecstatic about winning.
“It’s a great feeling. It’s a new opportunity to push harder, to go 10 times harder than we did before. To be here and to be acknowledged is a great feeling,” he shared.
He explained the inspiration behind Sweet Ehh.
“I was just in the studio one day and I was vibing to the track and these words just came to me, God sweet ehh, because initially, I had just gotten a deposit in my account. And I’m saying God sweet ehh. I then reached a point where I was saying who else could I add to this song to make it pop. And I sent it to Sone G and within five minutes he sent it back to me.”
DaJourney, whose real name is Orville Williams, has worked on several projects including Jason Mighty’s Overflow album and DJ Nicholas’ Abnormal album.
According to DaJourney, he contributed to several of the songs and albums that were nominated in the recent Sterling Gospel Music Awards.
“A lot of the songs nominated, I played a role in them by either producing, audio tape or I was the mixing engineer,” he said.
He is also the manager for award-winning gospel deejay Prince Saj, who finished second in the 2021 Magnum Top Performa competition.
“My album will be released shortly. Prince Saj is the focus now for DaJourney Productions and we have some songs to release as well. We’re busy making music and we just can’t wait for the world to hear them,” said DaJourney.
