A reflection of excellence
There has been widespread debate and criticism of the process of selection for some candidates who were selected to receive national honours and awards at the recent ceremony held at King’s House.
Many Jamaicans took to social media to express their discomfort with musical artiste Wayne Mitchell being conferred with the Order of Distinction in the class of Officer. There were mixed views on whether he was deserving of such an honour. Some stated that he has not done much within the music fraternity, while others shared that he does not only have an impact on music but he also serves as a role model to many Jamaican fathers and families through the exemplary life he displays. Others shared the view that there were other noteworthy candidates who have contributed much to the development of music in Jamaica and were more deserving of the award.
It is important to note that the awards are given to Jamaicans who are not only expert in their field of work, but also Jamaicans who are outstanding figures that contribute wholeheartedly to national development through their work and lifestyle, which impacts many lives. People who are awarded should be those with the highest degree of integrity, who will not bring the award into disrepute irrespective of whether they are experts in their fields. This is a national award that represents our island, Jamaica. As such, the reputation of the holder of these awards should not be in question, as this will taint the office of the award.
Jamaica, the vibrant island nation renowned for its rich cultural heritage, iconic music, and breathtaking landscapes, takes great pride in recognising outstanding achievements and contributions.
The selection process for Jamaica’s national honours and awards is a meticulous and well-thought-out procedure aimed at acknowledging individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the development of the country. This article delves into the process behind Jamaica’s national honours and awards, highlighting its importance and the values it upholds.
Amidst the views expressed by the public, Jamaicans ought to become familiar with the process for how one is selected for these awards. This will dispel the notion that the selection process is highly political, a view with very little merit to support it. There is a process that is used which has proven highly effective and transparent and should not be undermined by people who speak from a position of ignorance.
There is a National Honours and Awards Act that sets out the parameters of how the process should be undertaken. If it is found that the selection process is breeched in any area of the statute, then the court has a responsibility to intervene to rectify the issue. It should not be said at face value that a person is deserving or not for the grant of an award before you familiarise yourself with how the process is undertaken. The awards are a symbol of national pride and should not become controversial and politicised.
The Significance of National Honours and Awards
National honours and awards are more than just tokens of appreciation, they serve as symbols of recognition for exceptional dedication and service to the nation. The process emphasises Jamaica’s commitment to celebrating those who have made notable contributions in various fields, including but not limited to arts and culture, science and technology, public service, sports, and philanthropy. These honours inspire excellence, foster national pride, and encourage Jamaicans to relentlessly strive for greatness.
The Selection Process
The selection process for Jamaica’s national honours and awards is designed to be transparent, fair, and objective, ensuring that deserving individuals are duly recognised. Here are the key steps involved:
1) Nomination: The process begins with nominations from the public. Any individual or organisation can propose candidates they believe are deserving of national recognition. Nominations must be submitted to The Chancery of the Orders of the Societies of Honour, Office of the Prime Minister or directly to the Chancery via e-mail: chan-prot@opm.gov.jm
2) Screening:
Once nominations are received, a thorough screening process is undertaken by a committee comprising distinguished individuals across various sectors. This committee reviews the nominations, verifies their accuracy, and ensures that candidates meet the requisite criteria for consideration.
3) Shortlisting:
Following the screening process, a shortlist of exceptional candidates is generated. The shortlisted nominees are carefully evaluated based on their achievements, impact, and contributions to Jamaica.
4) Selection:
A final selection committee, comprising eminent individuals from diverse backgrounds, is appointed to deliberate and determine the recipients of the national honours and awards. This committee critically assesses each nominee’s credentials, considering factors such as their influence, commitment to national development, and overall contribution to society.
5) Approval and announcement:
The selected nominees are then presented to the governor general, who is responsible for granting the national honours and awards. Upon approval, the recipients’ names are announced publicly and a formal ceremony is organised to bestow these prestigious honours.
Jamaica’s national honours and awards epitomise the nation’s commitment to recognising and celebrating excellence. The rigorous selection process ensures that only the most-deserving individuals receive these prestigious accolades. By honouring those who have made significant contributions to Jamaican society, various fields, and the overall development of the nation, Jamaica inspires others to excel and contribute positively to their communities. Such recognition fosters a culture of achievement and highlights Jamaica’s remarkable talents and accomplishments on the international stage.
