Student innovators recognised at Robotics and Coding Summer Camp Awards
Imagination and creativity were on full display at the Robotics and Coding Summer Camp Awards Ceremony held on Monday, August 28 at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium, University of Technology in Kingston. Following an engaging and informative four-week learning experience hosted by Young Scholars Educational Ltd and powered by Flow’s fibre-fast internet, the ceremony recognised top performers for their outstanding work while showcasing the students’ innovative creations.
Six participants – Aeisha Bailey, Donnae Beckford, Kevanna Patterson, Niyah Reid, Soyini Slater and Toni-Ann Williams – earned top honours while all the students received certificates of participation.
Guests at the awards ceremony enjoyed live demonstrations of the robotic creations as well as a mini-exhibition that featured displays from various sponsors. The students also interacted with guests, explaining their inventions and sharing the profound impact the camp had on their lives.
Aeisha Bailey, who was one of the camp’s top performers, shared her experience.
“The camp was fun and educational. I learned so many new things and I can’t decide which I liked more, robotics or virtual reality. Of course, I am happy that I was one of the top performers. I wish it could have been longer so I could have learnt more!” she exclaimed.
Fellow camper Jahdaine Johnson shared his enthusiasm about attending the camp and said, “This is my first time attending a summer camp that is all about using technology. I really enjoyed the experience. It was interesting for me to see how I can use technology for both work and play. The biggest thing for me was virtual reality. I didn’t realize it was so easy to set up by just using a phone.”
The Robotics and Coding Summer Camp and subsequent awards ceremony were successfully executed through a collaboration with Young Scholars Educational Ltd, E-Learning Jamaica, the Flow Foundation, the HEART/NSTA Trust Leap Centre, the JPS Foundation, the Ministry of National Security, the NCB Foundation and ThinkNChange.
The innovative summer camp highlighted the importance of technology and the role it will play in shaping the future for not just the younger generation, but everyone as our world continues to be digitally transformed.
