Barbados bound
FOUR of Jamaica’s top karters will head to Barbados in November for the second Caribbean Junior Karting Academy Trophy (CJKAT).
“We have a strong field of four junior karters from Jamaica and I believe we will do very well and better than last time. Zander Williams, Brandon Finzi-Smith, Luke Spencer and Matthew Warmington will represent Jamaica,” explained Neil Williams, vice-president — Jamaica Karting Association.
The four were chosen based on a variety of parameters including their respective standing in their classes. CJKAT is funded by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile’s (FIA) Sport Grant Programme and hosted by the Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF). The FIA is motorsports international governing body. It will take place at Bushy Park Circuit, November 3-6. The four will join teams from several other Caribbean nations including hosts Barbados. Antigua, Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago were also invited to participate. All teams will use the same karts, fuel and be given a set number of tyres.
The event, first held in 2019, focused on developing talent in the 11 to 17-year-old bracket. Jamaican Zander Williams is the experienced one in the group having joined Ryan Chisholm, and Tommi Gore for the previous event.
“It was held over three days and two Bajans, Adam Mallalieu and Calem Maloney, had a big home field advantage. Although the Jamaica won most of the last race weekend, they were too far behind in points to win,” said Williams.
Mallalieu won the event, with Maloney taking second.
At the last JKA meet on October 2, there was plenty of time to get in some practice before having to deal with the upcoming overseas adversaries. In Comer 50, it was a consistent Nathan Sutherland who topped the points table at the end of the day, despite the faster Dylan Smith. Smith poor finish in the final race dropped him three points below the leader. In Rotax Micro Max, Brandon Shor continued his lead in the class. Paul Patterson dominated the Rotax Mini Max, coming from last to first in the final reverse grid race, securing a comfortable points margin. Spencer and Williams battled hard all day, with Spencer getting the best of his Rotax Junior rival this time around. Finzi-Smith showed why he’s headed to Barbados taking the top step of the Rotax Senior leader board. Super Rotax went the way of Raffique Golaub.
