The worst holiday foods for your fitness journey
HOLIDAY foods often tend to be rich in calories, sugars, and fats, which can contribute to weight gain if consumed excessively. Additionally, the festive season may lead to overeating and a deviation from regular fitness routines, making it challenging to maintain a healthy balance. With Christmas approaching, the season can be hell for those who have adopted a healthy lifestyle over the last several months.
Here are some of the worst holiday foods for you if you’re on a fitness journey, according to workout developer Mesha-Gaye Wright.
High-calorie beverages
Sugary cocktails, creamy eggnogs, and other festive drinks can be loaded with calories. Opt for water or choose lighter alternatives to manage calorie intake.
Fried appetizers
Fried foods, deep-fried appetisers, or appetisers with lots of cream or sugar tend to be high in calories and unhealthy fats.
High-calorie desserts
Traditional Christmas desserts such as cakes, pies, puddings and cookies, can be rich in sugars and fats.
Creamy dips and sauces
Dips made with cream, cheese or mayonnaise can be calorie-dense. Choose lighter options like yoghurt-based dips.
Processed meats
High-fat processed meats such as sausages, bacon or fatty cuts of ham can add extra calories. Opt for lean protein sources.
Excessive alcohol consumption
Alcoholic beverages can contribute empty calories. Limit intake and choose lower-calorie options like light beer or wine.
Large portions
Be mindful of portion sizes, especially during holiday feasts. Overeating, even with healthier options, can contribute to weight gain.
Holiday lattes and coffee drinks
Festive coffee beverages with added syrups, whipped cream and flavoured toppings can pack a calorie punch. Choose simpler, lower-calorie drinks.
“Moderation is key, and incorporating healthier alternatives and mindful eating practices can help you enjoy the holiday festivities without compromising your goals,” Wright said.
