Papaya leaves: For your health, skin and more
PAPAYA leaves are believed to have several health benefits, although more research is needed to fully confirm some of these claims. More recently they have been touted as the cure-all for dengue, but herbalist Kenute Harrison says there are loads of other potential benefits for your health and more.
Some potential benefits include:
Platelet production
There is some anecdotal evidence suggesting that papaya leaf extract may help increase platelet count, which is crucial for those with certain illnesses like dengue fever.
Digestive health
The enzymes in papaya leaves, such as papain, may aid in digestion and help prevent constipation.
Anti-inflammatory properties
Papaya leaves contain compounds with potential anti-inflammatory effects which could be beneficial for reducing inflammation in the body.
Rich in antioxidants
Antioxidants in papaya leaves, such as flavonoids and phenolic acids may help neutralise free radicals, providing potential health benefits.
Immune system support
Some studies suggest that the properties of papaya leaves may contribute to overall immune system support.
Liver health
Papaya leaves may have properties supporting liver health. However, more research is needed to confirm these effects.
Skin health
Topical application of crushed papaya leaves is believed by some to help with skin conditions and wounds due to its potential anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties.
“While papaya leaves show promise in various aspects, it’s crucial to consult with a health-care professional before incorporating them into your diet or using them for medicinal purposes, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions or are taking medications,” Harrison cautioned.
