Towards WOMEN’S equality
AUGUST is the month dedicated to the celebration and recognition of women’s equality, with the 26th being Women’s Equality Day, which seeks to empower women to reach their full potential and create a world where gender doesn’t limit opportunities.
The day in the United States marks a turning point in the history of the struggle for equal treatment of women and women’s rights, and in this region, it has been acknowledged that a powerful force of Caribbean women is driving progress and pushing for change.
World Bank country director for the Caribbean countries Lilia Burunciuc has pointed to substantial progress in advancing gender equality in the region, even as challenges persist. But notably, she highlighted trends in gender equality in the Caribbean, to include the fact that academically, women outperform men; women are more likely to participate in the workforce; female entrepreneurship rates are comparatively high; and women’s political representation has significantly improved in the Caribbean.
As we use this month to think again about how women can claim their voices, here are some ways you can make a difference this month, from life coach and actualisation specialist Yolanda Livingston.
