MORE THAN A MOTHER: A super mom
MICHELLE HIGGINS, MANAGER WITH RESPONSIBILITY FOR GROUP LEARNING, DEVELOPMENT, TALENT, AND CHANGE, SAGICOR GROUP JAMAICA
Son: Matthew, 13
Michelle Higgins is the manager with responsibility for group learning, development, talent, and change at Sagicor Group Jamaica. She works as part of a collaborative team to partner with and support Sagicor team members in Jamaica and the Grand Cayman to determine, plan and provide the most innovative and effective learning solutions. She also manages the company’s change management and communication activities that impact the team members
She is the 2022 Manager of the Year for Sagicor Group Jamaica, as well as the entire Sagicor Financial Corporation (SFC). Not only is Higgins a super manager, but she is also a super mom to her 13-year-old son Matthew, her team, and other persons that she has taken under her wing.
“I believe that being a mother is not only about giving birth or having a child, but it is in one’s ability and natural inclination to care for and nurture those who are placed in your care. As such, I embrace being ‘more than a mother’ by not only being a supportive and involved mother to my own son, but also by playing the role of ‘mom’ to so many team members at work, and other persons in my family and community,” she said.
“I do my best to show up fully in my son’s life. I like to say he is my handbag. I must confess that sometimes I feel like a helicopter mom because I tend to ‘hover’ over everything he does; school, church, extra-curricular activities, gaming — you name it, if he’s in it, I am in it too. That has created a unique bond between us. My husband and I have a great relationship with Matthew, and we talk about absolutely everything and do everything together.”
She added: “This is not an easy feat; it takes lots of dedication to be a working mother, wife, sister, and aunty, and to also extend compassion and care to others who see me as a mother. But this is a role that I treasure and enjoy, because being a mother in whatever capacity is truly a magical and wonderful experience. Having the opportunity to be a positive influence in the lives of other human beings is simply fulfilling and gives my life a greater sense of purpose.”
