4 oils to help your hair loss
HAIR loss can occur for various reasons — age, illness, pregnancy and the like, and we’re always seeking ways to stop or put a pause on the shedding. Research has shown that successful treatment in part involves the use of essential oils, and herbalist Kenute Harrison says there are a few that work very well.
“Essential oils help to stimulate the hair follicles towards growth, and consistent use will guarantee results,” Harrison said. “The important thing is to be consistent in your use, and take care of your hair in-between.”
Here are four oils to include in your routine if you’re experiencing hair loss, or just want to thicken or grow your locs.
Rosemary oil
Various studies have shown that the use of rosemary oil will result in an increase in new hair growth and significant decrease in hair loss. Rosemary oil has been successfully used for alopecia conditions for a long time. The rosemary (scientific name salvia rosmarinus) is a fragrant herb that is widely available locally. You can make your own oil or hair spray from fresh rosemary to help your hair growth journey.
Castor oil
Castor oil is a multipurpose vegetable oil which is pressed from the seeds of the ricinus communis plant. Castor oil has been used for thousands of years and it is a popular herbal treatment for various conditions. It is also used extensively in the natural beauty industry. Castor oil can also be used as a natural hair conditioner. Applying castor oil to the hair on a regular basis will help to lubricate the hair shaft, increase flexibility, and decrease the chance of breakage. In addition, the Omega-3 fatty acids present in castor oil will increase blood circulation to the hair shaft and scalp, thus promoting hair growth. Castor oil can also be used on the eyebrows and lashes in order to make them grow. Putting castor oil on the scalp will also help to moisturise the scalp and prevent flaking.
Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil, from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree, has been used for centuries for various ailments like treating dandruff and other dry scalp issues by reducing inflammation. It improves circulation, paving the way for healthy hair growth. Tea tree oil should be combined with a carrier oil like coconut oil, and it will stimulate dormant hair follicles and bring them to life. It helps your hair and scalp absorb nutrients efficiently, which helps in hair growth.
Argan oil
Argan oil is called liquid gold because of its immense benefits for the hair and skin. In its pure form it is loaded with antioxidants, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids, and these will help your dry, damaged hair by restoring lustre and promoting growth. Argan oil is excellent for use in hot oil treatments and is also good to use as a heat protectant if you use a lot of heat on your hair. The phenols in argan oil strengthen hair follicles, promote a healthy scalp, and lead to stronger, thicker hair.
