How black women may have saved the world
WHO needs comicbook superheroes when you’ve got super voting blocs? Some heroes truly do not wear capes or costumes. This was proven true in the United States during the 2020 election cycle. Many debates broke out during the Trump administration regarding the direction the United States was headed and the global fallout. As is said in Jamaica, “America sneeze and Jamaica catch their cold”, meaning whatever happens in the US directly affects Jamaica. Concern and deep fears were rampant.
What happens in America as it relates to politics and policies impacts the rest of the world directly. Their changes in work permit allowances, COVID-19 protocols, and the introduction of travel bans, made ripple effects around the world. The impact of the then Trump administration reverberated around the globe. Developments in the US rapidly impacted administrations in Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India and other countries particularly.
US policy directions, considered conservative, had radical outcomes being felt way beyond Washington. COVID deaths pilled-up in Brazil and India. Hawaii would even think it was under attack from North Korea. And Jewish folk and journalists alike seemed to begin wondering about their general safety. All due to the “sneeze” of America under the then US administration.
There was fear and uncertainty in the US about civil rights, race relations, tensions regarding North Korea, Russia, NATO’s future, and the global economy. Then entered the likes of Georgia’s own Stacey Abrams. Without a cape or spandex, often in masks though, she and others displayed genuine heroic qualities. So much so that in 2020 news outlets like CNBC, BBC, and others ran articles referring to Stacey Abrams, Latosha Brown, and other black women as having ensured the election of Joe Biden.
These women and their leagues gave life to the campaign of the Democrats. USAToday.com said in an article, “About 90 per cent of black women voted for President-elect Joe Biden over Donald Trump, making them Democrats’ most loyal bloc. They have shown up to the polls at higher rates than any other group. Experts say their nationwide voter mobilisation efforts led to the historic turnout that secured Biden’s victory.
The Washington Post also acknowledged the feat of these super-bloc women in the US – “black women saved the Democrats”. Yet, we now realise they have done much more than save the Democrats. They may have saved democracy and the free world. By electing President Biden they have not only caused the first woman (a black woman) to occupy the vice president’s office, but they have also caused a comprehensive COVID vaccine rollout, effectively armed Ukraine against Russia, stabilised NATO, impacted global supply and demand, impacted the global economy… Well, eat your heart out DC and Marvel.
It seems there’s a new kind of Justice League deserving global recognition now. There’s a real-life association with super-power that has apparently brought the world back from the brink of utter disaster, and they don’t wear costumes nor can they fly.
