Heal your gut with these 5 wellness shots
GUT healing wellness shots are hot in the health community, as they’re known as the cure-all for your various ailments. Jamaicans have been doing this for decades though — in the form of roots and tonics that keep the doctor away.
Herbalist Kenute Harrison says there are a few things you should have in your arsenal as you seek to heal your gut and keep well, and promotes the use of these wellness shots that are becoming popular on social media.
“If you’re relying on just medications from your doctor to treat all the lifestyle-related illnesses you have, then what you’re doing is basically putting a band aid over the problem,” Harrison said. “What you need to do is address your problems at their root, and lifestyle-related health issues need lifestyle changes to make you better.”
He recommends these five shots to boost your health, and your immunity.
Orange shot for colds and flu
Blend together the juice of an orange, a lime, a teaspoon of turmeric powder or a piece of turmeric root, a bit of ginger, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, and some water. This will help your digestion, help with inflammation, and keep that cold away.
Mint shot to make you less anxious
Jamaicans have been drinking peppermint tea since the dawn of time, and it’s good for stomach issues. Steep mint in hot water for as long as you like, and sweeten with honey. This helps with bloating, indigestion, fatigue, poor sleep and anxiety.
Sorrel tea for weight loss
Sorrel is not just for Christmas —brewing it as a tea helps with various health issues too. The hibiscus plant is anti-inflammatory, lowers cholesterol, promotes weight loss, and helps with indigestion. Brew it like you would your peppermint tea, and you can even combine it with lemon grass and honey for an extra kick.
Pine and ginger shot to boost your sex drive
The Pine and Ginger song isn’t just creative licence — pineapples are good for balancing your pH, and making you feel and taste better. This is a simple blend of ginger and pineapple with lime, and is also rich with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that also boosts your immune system.
Beetroot shot for energy
Blend two beets, along with lemon juice, orange juice and some cherries or berries of your choice. Beets boost your energy and also fight inflammation.
Harrison recommends that you can make these shots in batches, and store in tiny glass bottles in your refrigerator, so you can grab and go as needed.
