ZAID by Zaid Smith
Glenroy ‘Zaid’ Smith debuted his third children’s collection recently, at the Island Child Style runway show, a part of Sagicor’s motivational seminar. “I was encouraged by the show’s co-conceptualiser Norma Williams to ‘bring me’ and be more true to myself, so this is me bringing my personal vibe to the runway,” Smith told All Woman Fashion (AWF).
Indeed inspiration was sought from the Motherland via his use of African printed fabric which were hand-painted in colourful images of animals on plain cotton and linen shirts. His designs for the lone female model came to him while watching Disney‘s 2019 version of Aladdin; an ethnic element to a Princess Jasmine styled-outfit with a structured neckpiece made of printed fabric was incorporated.
Smith visualises fabric as canvas, the sewing machine as the paintbrush and thread as the paint which seamlessly stitches his vision as wearable art.
Though known for his adult designs, Island Child Style has allowed him the opportunity to create clothes for children and with this collection a hit, he has plans to continue dressing members of the next generation in big designs with strong African inspiration.
