AW Fashion: Tribe Nine Studios — A New Frontier
Tribe Nine Studios Creative Director Troy Williamson likens his designing process to “putting together a piece of performance art”. It has perhaps taken him in excess of a decade being immersed in the creative industry to find the appropriate label. He might very well be right about the expressive Eurotribalistic pieces.
Williamson, who has been stitching since the age of 13, credits the influence of his seamstress mother for his affinity to fashion, which he believes is crafted by personal style. “I think [designing] just subconsciously seeped into my brain,” he shared with All Woman Fashion.
After returning to the island from the UK and forging a friendship with the late iconoclastic fashion designer Dexter ‘3D’ Pottinger, Williamson set out to share his vision: you can wear something that the rest of the world isn’t wearing and be OK with it.
The Tribe Nine label pushes the borders of fashion norms with its creative incorporation of stripes and prints. However, when questioned whether his heavy use of tribal prints was influenced by recent international trends, he explained, “It’s not a fad. It’s really coming from me.”
The designer’s goal is to style clients in perhaps ordinary articles of clothing, but, by adding their personal style during the creative process, make it look completely different. “It excites me creating a suit that someone can wear to work lined with a print or a stripe, or just a different cut from the other square suits you see around,” he expressed.
Williamson’s raison d’etre is the expression of joy on the faces of his clients when presented with the finished product. “I want everyone to feel as though my pieces are an extention of themselves,” Williamson divulged.
