AW Fashion: The Final Analysis
Career fashion designer aspirants Aljodhi Robins, Tka Walters, Schenika Lewis, Iouka Hyde and Donald Mirander — all final-year students in the Faculty of Education and Liberal Arts at the University of Technology (UTech), Jamaica — presented five individual summer collections that defined their aesthetic outlooks, at the showcase event titled The Vault, held on May 13 at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel’s penthouse floor, Talk of The Town.
Headlining womenswear designer Mirander, who counts Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ wife, Juliet Holness as a speed-dial client, delivered on his promising expanding profile at the evening’s 17th floor-hosted fashion presentation, with a winning collection of dramatic pieces, most notable for their clean cuts and finishes. The work of Mirander’s comtemporaries was not without merit. Tka Walters’ vibrant and sexy Daring Denim Collection, which for us harkened unironically to Rock’s pre-eminent denim designer of the 1990s and the aughts, Earl ‘Biggy’ Turner, had a charged energy while Scheneika Lewis’ Romantic Bloom Collection was a pleasant mix of chevron and tropical prints, and metallic black swimwear.
