Parish 14
It has taken long enough but nothing, we reckon, happens before its time. So, first things first! Thank you, Ingrid Emmons, for elevating — with the opening of your small local gallery on the Hip Strip — the conversation around Jamaican art and craft in the city of Montego Bay. The name Parish 14 — genius! Emmons’s wish is to have a collection of work from all 14 parishes, eventually representing artists from across the region. “We need to change the lens through which our guests to the island view us,” she says. “As the curator, I will invest and provide guidance to the local talent, giving them a different perspective. There is no reason why we cannot pair Courtney Washington’s art couture featured only at Parish 14 with Manolo Blahnik’s and a driftwood necklace from Veronique. Our work is worthy of the global stage and it’s time we tell the world.”
Nuff said, really, save: support the cause. The grand opening takes place on January 31 from 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm.
The gallery is up and running and is located at Casa Blanca, 65 Gloucester Avenue.
