USA hammer T&T women 6-0
SAN ANTONIO, USA (CMC) — Trinidad and Tobago’s (T&T) national women’s team failed in their efforts to end an 11-year winning streak at home by the United States Women team Thursday night. T&T women suffered a 0-6 drubbing at the hands of their American counterparts in a lopsided exhibition encounter at the Alamodome.
T&T goalkeeper Kimika Forbes was outstanding, particularly in the first half, by keeping the scoreline manageable.
The United States dominated the game and took the lead courtesy of a bizarre penalty call by the referee in the 21st minute when Alex Morgan collided with Forbes in midair as Forbes rushed to punch a ball out of her box.
The referee awarded the penalty to the US, even though Forbes clearly managed to get to the ball first. Christen Press, who entered the game in the second half, scored a hat trick to seal the victory after a 0-1 advantage by the US at the half.
Press scored in the 61st, 75th and 84th minutes for her third career hat trick.
Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan and Lindsey Horan also scored as the United States Women extended their unbeaten home streak to 103 games. Their last loss at home was over Denmark in 2004 in Philadelphia.
For the second game in a row, the teams almost did not play. The US team had walked away from their friendly in Hawaii due to unsafe field conditions, while Trinidad & Tobago players went on strike over a money dispute with the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation.
Reports say US soccer stepped in to arrange a loan to get players paid so that a second cancellation could be avoided.
