Statement Pieces
Fashion designer Toya Taylor describes her Toya Taylor Collection as the perfect marriage between androgyny and classic femininity. “I use a lot of classic silhouettes with a modern edge,” she tells AW. Indeed her designs are, in her words, made for the woman who is not afraid of taking risks. Taylor explains that her collection “is a mix of bold prints and colours representing my island background: structured, clean lines that make perfect statement pieces”.
If Taylor is quietly upbeat, it’s because she recently unveiled her collection at Pittsburgh Style Week 2014. “I received great feedback and got a lot of press. There were write-ups in the Pittsburgh Tribune and the Pittsburgh City paper. Her designs were also featured on the television morning show Pittsburgh Today aired on CBS Pittsburgh.
My style motto is… Wear what makes you happy. If you are confident in what you’re wearing, it shows.
What I love most about the fashion industry is… that people are celebrated for being uniquely themselves. In fashion, you’re able to put pieces of yourself into what you wear. Being different from the pack is always appreciated and I love that.
If I were reincarnated as a piece of clothing… It would definitely be a blazer. This is a signature part of my wardrobe and I love the multi-functionality of it. You can take this from day to night simply by changing the colour or print. I’m not one-dimensional and a blazer is definitely not that, either.
For Take Style Out… I will be visiting a few of my fave stores like Bijoux, Style Savvy and KERRY ManWomanHome. TSO is all about shop, shop, shop!
Look out for the Toya Taylor Collection at Ocean Style Weekend, October 23-25, in Montego Bay.
