VOWS: For the LOVE of you
How they met…
Desmon and Misty met in 2008 at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, when Desmon came to perform a surgical consult on one of Misty’s patients. Desmon overheard Misty speaking to a Jamaican nurse and upon hearing her accent he asked if she was a ‘yardie’. His
approach did not impress Misty, and Desmon’s repeated attempts to flirt with her on subsequent occasions proved futile. However, she finally agreed to a platonic relationship. They remained friends for five-and-a-half months before romance entered the picture.
The proposal…
…took place on September 3, 2011. Desmon planned a romantic date, which he told Misty was in celebration of her new job. They went downtown Indianapolis to the gondola rides which are on a canal that flows through the city. Desmon chose that location because Misty previously mentioned that she had not ridden in a gondola since her last visit to Italy and would love to do so again. As the sun began to set, they enjoyed the gondola ride with their operator singing Italian love songs. “While we were enjoying the view and music, Dezzie asked me if I loved him, and I said yes. He then asked me to name the reasons why– so I did just that,” shared Misty. “Because he knows me, he knew I would ask him the same question,” she continued. When she asked, he responded, “When I look towards my future I can’t imagine it without you. I know that you will be an amazing wife and mother, and I can’t think of a better time to start our life together than now.” With that he took the ring out of his pocket, got down on one knee in the gondola and asked Misty to marry him.
After the gondola ride, they walked towards a white horse and carriage that had been waiting for them. It took them around downtown Indianapolis then dropped them by the Oceannaire Restaurant where a table had been reserved for them. On the table were a bottle of Champagne, flowers and a congratulatory note. After dinner, they were picked up by a limousine and taken to a wine and dessert bar where the celebration continued. “It was hands-down the most thoughtful and romantic gesture anyone has ever done for me and totally reaffirmed his love for me,” shared Misty.
The wedding…
…was held on June 23, 2012 at Secrets Wild Orchid, Montego Bay, which was beautifully decorated by Jan March and her team from Jan’s Bridal and Flowers. The couple wanted to have a whimsical yet elegant wedding inspired by summer, so they opted for an outdoor wedding with the colours lavender and green. The bride made her way up the aisle with her grandmother Lillian Allen, wearing a white strapless gown from Legends by Romona Keveza’s 2012 collection, to the sounds of Never Felt This Way by Alicia Keys. She was preceded by her bridesmaids who wore elegant designs by Bari Jay, each clutching a bouquet of roses and orchids. The bride and her bridesmaids looked stunning in delicately applied make-up by Paul March, which complemented their tasteful hairstyles by Jozie Douglas of Jozie’s Hair Salon. The bridegroom and his groomsmen cut their own dash in tailored suits by Dexter Huxtable of Spoke’s Apparel.
The wedding was officiated by Reverend Dr Stephen Jennings. The union ceremony selection was very important to the couple, who eventually opted for the sand ceremony. “We chose the sand ceremony because it has religious significance, and as Christians, we wanted to incorporate it not only to cement our marriage but our faith as well,” said Misty. The couple exited the church to the bridal recessional performed by soloist Tamille Braithwaite.
The reception…
…followed at the same venue, which was also decorated by Jan March and her team from Jan’s Bridal and Flowers. Selena Wong created the exquisite cake that the couple cut before sharing their first dance together as husband and wife to Here and Now by Luther Vandross. The guests were later invited to join the couple on the dance floor to party the night away to selections from DJ Sakou Phipps. The newly-weds honeymooned at Iberostar Grand Hotel — Rose Hall, Montego Bay.
