Beautiful Blossoms
Whether you choose an oversized, overflowing arrangement dripping with luxuriously rich colour – picture scarlet red and forest green – lit by candles dripping wax, for dramatic impact; a one-colour floral palette for a minimal, modern twist, or a tropical vignette complete with canary bird yellows and turquoise blue hues, it is the flowers that truly bring a setting to life.
No longer is floral arrangement as simple as sticking some stems in a piece of oasis. It has diversified to a high level of elegance where you are likely to create custom-made flowers to match the décor, and even use accessories like candles, crystals and fruits as the focal point of an arrangement to provide a playful approach.
Truth be told, when it comes to expectations at weddings today, the sky is truly the limit. The more imaginative, creative and whimsical, the better.
With so much choice out there, Vows investigated the hottest trends for the season.
. Fresh and fruity. According to TheKnot.com, (the wedding bible for many brides to be), a hot trend this season, and a natural choice when it comes to creating centrepieces, are fruit and other natural produce, which add visual texture and depth to an arrangement as well as fragrance. In addition, their natural colors – vibrant oranges, citrus yellow and lime green and jewel-toned purples – are festive and rich. You may even choose to highlight the fruit on their own, for example a tall vase filled with lemons adds a fresh splash of citrus tang.
. Mix it up. The judges are out.do you mix the colours or do you pick one when it comes to centrepieces? According to Martha Stewart Weddings, you mustn’t be afraid to mix the colours, embracing bright and exuberant tones layered with texture and shape. Brides are becoming increasingly starved for colour, and are instead opting for a range of colours that complement each other. However, another way to mix things up, and still keep it simple, is to choose a variety of different vases, but filled with the same flowers to create an eclectic, modern look.
. Colour me mine. Thanks to the progression in the flower industry, the options are now endless when it comes to picking the perfect colour flowers to match your theme. Tai Flora, with locations in Ocho Rios, Negril and Montego Bay, have perfected the art of matching by importing genetically altered flowers in an array of colours. “Hot is hot right now,” says Dr Paulette Hossman, owner of Tai Flora. She is referring to hot colours of course, especially hot pink, orange, and blue.
However, the options are unending: chocolate brown, green, even black. Alongside roses, exotic species of orchids are also hot this season, especially mokaras and cymbidiums. When it comes to choosing flowers, Hossman suggests that the bride first decides on a theme colour. “Increasingly we are getting orders for the monochromatic look, where everything from the tablecloth to the chair covers match,” she says. “We then often custom order the flowers because we know how important it is for everything to flow, in unison.”
