All Woman editor to participate in int’l population seminar
INDI Mclymont-Lafayette, editor of the Observer’s All Woman magazine, will leave Jamaica this weekend for Washington DC to attend the first of two seminars put on by the Washington-based Population Reference Bureau.
The Women’s Edition Programme began in 1993 and brings together senior-level women journalists – editors, writers and producers – from developing countries to examine key topics related to women’s reproductive health, development and population and to increase their news coverage of these critical areas.
The journalists attending the seminars identify the most pressing and timely issues, then collaborate to find the best ways to cover their publications or broadcasts.
“The Women’s Edition offers participating editors, writers and producers a wonderful opportunity to become part of an international network of leading women journalists interested in women’s health and development,” said a statement from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) office in Kingston.
The UNFPA said it was happy that Mclymont-Lafayette had accepted the invitation to participate in the programme, particularly since she was the top awardee at the UNFPA Caribbean Media Awards 2003 held last November in Kingston. The Platinum award was presented to Mclymont-Lafayette for her story ‘Sandi’s Foray into Prostitution’. “The ability of the writer to convince Sandi to use her name, candidly discuss her sexual history and to deal with taboos about prostitution were the clinchers,” said the judging panel at the November award.
