Airbrush this festive season
Calm down ! There’s no need to panic. The invitations have started to arrive and our aim at All Woman is to keep you ahead of the game this festive season. Now have we ever let you down?
We turned to our From a Pin to an Anchor directory listing and decided to put one of those experts to the test.
Make-up artist and licensed esthetician, Rose Barnett, shows how to put the best face forward this season.
The challenge for many this time of year is how to move the face effortlessly from festive luncheon fares to fabulous soirees. “Smart make-up application” says Barnett, “will get you in and out of the powder room in less than five minutes.” What we found out at the All Woman Beauty desk is that Rose Barnett has a secret weapon. Her Airbrush technique was perfected in California and it’s absolutely fabulous. Be prepared to emerge from her In Skin salon at Mid Spring Plaza with perfect dewy skin.
Achieving the Look:
Actual dots are used to paint a picture. There’s no blending so the skin breathes naturally. The technique is excellent for photography and is slowly becoming every smart bride’s second maid of honour.
This water-based application requires no touch- up. At the end of the day soap and water do the trick.
Barnett applied a festive light day look to attorney- at- law Diane Edward Davis.
For smoky eyes (the season’s hot look) she used a shadow pencil to blend up and out to the contour bone.
A single application of black mascara was used.
Because the drama revolves around the eyes, Barnett uses a lighter shade of lipstick for the mouth to ‘bring focus to one area of the face to avoid looking artificial.’
Airbrushing can also be done to the eyebrows as well as the mouth. Stencils are used to achieve this. Those of you wishing to tuck into those sumptuous festive fares will love the fact that your lips might lose the top layer (the gloss) but will still have a gorgeous colour.
Barnett used a little gloss on the lips.
Diane’s blush is applied with the airbrush (a different colour is used and looks wonderfully natural).
We loved this make-up demonstration for the use of both the formidable airbrush technique, as well as brushes. The touch technique was still very much a part of the routine.
Her final make-up trick is that of spraying rosewater for a dewy day-time look.
To allow the subject to move from the office to her pm soiree, Barnett applies shimmer pear light foundation. Naturally there’s lots of blending.
Her tip here is to set face with a bronzer, and to use a translucent colourless setting powder for touch-ups.
Remember to coordinate colour. “Less is always more” she warns “so if you are using shimmer or glitters, apply a little at first and then blend up. Look at yourself in the light and apply where the light hits your face.”
For the eyes, for glamour and sexiness, add two more coats of black mascara, a shimmer highlight to the eyes, a stronger blush, and gloss to lipstick.
Apply gloss to the centre of the lips and allow to spread on its own.
Red is in for Christmas, so do not be afraid to wear it. Red has various undertones so find one that suits you. Or use your favourite shade and add red gloss over it.
Add petroleum jelly to teeth (this helps the inner lips to glide and adds sheen to the teeth).
Do not forget the ears (they are often left shiny úthe hair oil, sprays etc) so powder them down and leave them as cool as the face and neck.
Persons with vitiligo will find the airbrush technique, an easier more practical solution. The treatment, by the way, is available at the salon or in the privacy of your home and is far from prohibitive.
