Inexpensive expressions of love
February is regarded as a month of love. This love is usually demonstrated through expensive gifts and dinners. But expressions of love need not be between two lovers. Why not expand on the theme of love and save money at the same time. This year say “I love you” to friends, family, co-workers and others with actions from the heart and gifts that you create. Yes, it does take a little money, but the greater cost will be the effort and creativity you put into it.
1. Give flowers from your garden
Anyone can buy flowers from street side vendors or florists, but to take the time to grow them in your own garden and then give them as gifts demonstrates your tree feelings.
2. Cook with care
Is there someone in your family that has special diet needs? A diabetic or someone with high blood pressure, maybe? If they have a hard time finding restaurants that cater for their health and particular tastes, why not cook them a special meal? Find out their favourite dishes and incorporate healthy ingredients.
3. Say it with pictures
Gather your friends and family together for Valentine’s or any other event. Be sure to take lots of pictures and then send copies to the family. This is a sure way to remind everyone of the event and keep warm memories alive.
4. Listen
Spend one day this month listening to your loved one(s). Give them centre stage for even one hour. Hear what they have to say about their hopes, dreams and ambitions.
5. Make an effort to smile at everyone. It may take some effort but perhaps it will be contagious from this Valentine’s Day on and you will be responsible for a random act of kindness.
6. Babysit
If you have friends who wish to go out, show your love by saving them the cost of a babysitter and volunteer to watch their child (children) for the night.
7. Pamper your better half
Consider something romantic that you can do for your partner this Valentine’s Day without spending a lot of money. Is it a massage, a candlelit dinner, a love letter, poetry? Whatever it is, make a special effort to do the very best job to show how much you care.
8. Craft
Can you sew, sing, draw, paint, or have some other hidden talent? Make a Valentine’s gift from scratch. Your cost will only be materials and time.
9. Bouquet of balloons
Buy inexpensive balloons at pharmacies or haberdasheries and just like you would roses, bunch them together and tie them. Use a variety of colours or just stick to red. For added punch, use coloured ribbons to tie them together. This is a fun treat for your special Valentine.
10. Make your own Valentine’s Day card.
Visit the stationary store and buy unusual papers in your Valentine’s favourite colour. Specialty paper can be had for under $50 per sheet. Create your own love poem or copy one you like and write it in the card. An easy, simple way to express your affection.
And finally, on Valentine’s Day don’t forget to say “I love you”.
