Tasha Hussey’s Couture
There seems to be much natural mystic blowing through designer Tasha Hussey’s chic new
atelier. Her life seems to have come full circle and she feels finally confident and comfortable that this is the spot approved by the dieties.
Indeed it has. A successful weekend opening, racks of beautiful clothes, exquisite leather bags,
abstract wrought iron furniture and shantung silk cushions.
These all add warmth, texture and much colour to her trendy space. Tasha, if truth be told, knew her way around the cutting floor long before enrolling at the prestigious Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. She was taught to build jackets by bespoke London-trained tailor Edmond Coffee. It certainly didn’t hurt either that her mother, Evet Hussey, created designer lines for the affluent. And that her father, musicologist Dermot Hussey, created a stir in Jamaica in one of the first pair of linen trousers. Her home was also where the “It” people of the seventies all passed through.
These externals have all come together beautifully and now shape the thinking of this spiritual woman.
Her influences today still include Mum and Dad but
there’s also Todd Oldman and Giorgio Armani.
Tasha Hussey has been home since 1996 and is here to stay. She calls this her second homecoming…” I am back on the block”.
There’s a smile, as she remembers her first completed piece. ” It was a halter top …I made it at age 5″.
That she has come a long way is an understatement, for when she’s not cutting at her beautiful mountain retreat, she’s on music video locations or styling fashion shoots for Skywriting.
She speaks fondly of her days as manager of the Gap in the United States, as well as the possibilities that could have followed. “The West Coast was offered,” she smiles and for a moment we wonder if there are regrets… Indeed even her father has his doubts.
” I decided to return home and there are no regrets. I feel that I’m at a good point in my life now. My boutique is home not only to Tasha Hussey designs but to other young designers. “If there is to be a resurgence in local fashion, our
guess is that the first model sashaying down the runway will be wearing designs by Tasha Hussey.
Today we show three of her pieces. The halter top has now become a lycra silver cowl with a strappy back.To this she adds elegant pants du soir in heavy paisley silk brocade and the Ostrich skin clutch is where the car keys, the lipstick and the cell phone will be placed.
And then there’s the Calico peasant style outfit with delicate trims of lace. There are insets of cotton print and once again, that ubiquitous clutch.
Finally, an amazing burst of green sensuality in a two piece shantung silk ensemble. Perfect for lounging in this festive season.
There’s more… lots more.
