Anglin sees bright future for youth in Jamaican badminton

Kenneth Anglin believes Jamaica’s emerging badminton talents could surpass his achievements, even as he continues to dominate the local circuit.

Anglin, who recently captured the A Division men’s singles title at the Shuttle Showdown 2026, said younger players’ rapid improvement is an encouraging sign for the sport’s future.

The accomplished player added the mixed doubles crown to his collection during the nine-day tournament, which ran from October 10 to 18.

“Being the A Division champion again feels great. I’ve been winning most of the local tournaments. I think my win rate is about 90 per cent, so I’ve been very successful in competing,” Anglin said.

However, he believes the growing competition from a new generation of players means the gap between himself and the upcoming talents is narrowing.

“There are a lot of new players on the scene that are improving at a fast rate, so even though I’m still able to win, they are not far off,” he noted.

Anglin singled out Daniel Ford, Amir McBean, Matheus Smith and Samuel Smith as players with the potential to take Jamaican badminton to another level.

“And and with the right environment, I’m definitely sure they’ll surpass what I’ve been able to achieve,” he said.

Anglin underlined his continued quality at the Shuttle Showdown, where he had to dig deep to secure the A Division men’s singles title.

He defeated Joel Angus 13–15, 15–12, 15–12 in a hard-fought three-set final before joining forces with Rihanna Rust to capture the mixed doubles title.

The pair also overcame Angus and Tahlia Richardson 15–12, 13–15, 15–12 in another closely contested final.

The Shuttle Showdown featured 40 events and provided a platform for both established players and emerging talents to showcase their abilities.

Richardson was another major winner in the A Division, claiming the women’s singles title with a 19–17, 15–11 victory over Katherine Wynter. She also partnered Breanna Bisnott to win the women’s doubles crown.

In the Masters division, Stephen Lue-Yen completed a triple crown, winning the men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles titles.

Lue-Yen defeated Joslyn Davis 15–10, 15–8 in the men’s singles final and partnered Johnny Huang to beat Gavin Seeriram and Abdul Freckleton 15–12, 15–11 in the men’s doubles final.

He teamed up with Antoinette Ingleton to secure the mixed doubles title.

The youth divisions also highlighted the sport’s potential, with Ella Belle Palmer sweeping the Under-15 girls’ events, while Abigail Harvey captured both the Under-17 and Under-19 girls’ singles titles.

For Anglin, however, the emergence of these young players is perhaps just as important as his latest success, as he looks towards a future in which Jamaica’s next generation could eventually surpass the current crop of champions.
