KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Health Fund (NHF) has increased subsidies for four vital diagnostic and screening services, effective September 24. They are used in the detection and management of cervical cancer, breast cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Representing an additional annual investment of approximately $7.76 million, the rate adjustments apply to pap smear, mammogram, electrocardiogram (ECG), and HbA1c testing to encourage early detection and align with national strategies to combat NCDs.

Beneficiaries will now benefit from subsidy increases of up to 88.5 per cent across covered services. Under the new adjustment, the pap smear subsidy moves from $1,300 to $2,450, HbA1c testing increases from $1,000 to $1,500, mammogram coverage rises from $3,000 to $3,800, and the ECG subsidy moves from $1,750 to $1,800.

By increasing these diagnostic subsidies, the Fund bridges a key financial gap in primary healthcare, making routine screenings far more accessible to patients before health conditions worsen.

“These increases reflect our continued investment in benefits that help Jamaicans to access important screening and diagnostic services, identify health concerns earlier and improve the management of chronic conditions” said Chief Executive Officer of the NHF, Everton Anderson.

Beneficiaries can access the enhanced subsidies by presenting their NHFCard at any participating provider islandwide—including 156 locations offering pap smears, 143 for HbA1c testing, 95 for ECGs, and 17 for mammograms. A complete list of participating locations, diagnostic benefits, and eligibility guidelines is available on the NHF website.

Eligibility requirements and the frequency with which beneficiaries can access the four benefits will remain unchanged following the subsidy increases. Women aged 21 and older may access the pap smear benefit once every three years. The mammogram benefit is available once annually to men and women aged 40 and over. Women aged 30 to 40 who are considered high risk, may also access the mammogram benefit once per year with a doctor’s referral.

NHFCard beneficiaries may access the ECG benefit once per year. For HbA1c testing, beneficiaries enrolled for diabetes may access the benefit up to four times per year, at 90-day intervals, while beneficiaries enrolled for other covered conditions may access it once annually.
