Pack Plays delivers a dominant performance in the Saint Cecelia Cup feature
THE Ricardo Mathie-conditioned Pack Plays continued to showcase his exceptional speed and stamina when he delivered an impressive performance to win the $1.4-million Saint Cecelia Cup feature at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
The four-year-old American-bred dark bay/brown colt, ridden by Shane Richardson, took command of the field from five furlongs (1,000m) out and never looked back, securing a convincing victory by a length and three-quarters. Pack Plays completed the Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over six and a half furlongs (1,300m) in a time of 1:19.1 (23.3 x 47.1 x 1:12.2) minutes.
As the gates opened, Pack Plays broke well and settled into third place behind Mamma Mia (Tajay Suckoo) and Legacy Isle (Omar Walker). Richardson guided him through the field, waiting for the perfect moment to make his move. As they approached the five-furlong marker
Pack Plays wasted no time, quickly surging to the front of the pack, and that was that.
Inspire Force (Raddesh Roman) made a strong late surge from far behind to claim second place, finishing 2½ lengths ahead of Blue Vinyl (Demar Williams) in third. This win marks Pack Plays’ third victory on local soil from eight starts.
Shane Ellis and Raddesh Roman rode two winners each on the 10-race card. Ellis won the opening race aboard Sugar Daddy for trainer Errol Subratie, and Incredible Jo in the third race for trainer Adrian Prince.
Roman rode Girvano to victory for trainer Jason DaCosta in the eighth race. Initially finishing second, Girvano was awarded first place after the disqualification of Unruly Mo.
In the 10th and final race Roman partnered with Cosmic Force for trainer Steven Todd. Similar to his earlier ride, Roman finished second but benefited from the disqualification of Shoamithebutcher, resulting in Cosmic Force being declared the winner.
Racing continues on Monday with 10 races on offer, starting at 12:00 pm.
