Lord of Ajahlon edges out So Beautiful in thrilling finish
In an electrifying finish, Lord of Ajahlon, an eight-year-old grey gelding trained by Joseph Thomas, secured a heart-stopping nose victory over So Beautiful in the opening event on April 12, 2025.
The contest was a three-year-old and upward Optional Claiming ($500,000-$400,000) race that included six-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) over 5½ furlongs (1,100m). Lord of Ajahlon won in a time of 1:11.1 (24.1 x 49.3 x 1:03.2).
Lord of Ajahlon settled mid-pack at the off as So Beautiful (Romane Gordon) took the early lead and brought the field into the half-mile (800m) turn ahead of Little Grovy Thing (Richie Shakes) and Salud (Demar Williams).
In a strategic move, jockey Jerome Innis rushed Lord of Ajahlon down to second place behind So Beautiful as they approached the final stretch.
The stage was set for a thrilling finish. So Beautiful battled bravely, but Lord of Ajahlon refused to give up. With a burst of speed, Lord of Ajahlon edged ahead of So Beautiful at the wire, winning by a nose. Little Grovy Thing finished third.
