Falmouth United qualify for JFF Championship semi-finals
Falmouth United are the first semi-final qualifier for the Jamaica Football Federation Championship after beating Reno 2-1 at Llandilo Sports Complex on Saturday.
The win carried Falmouth to 29 points, five more than second-placed Treasure Beach, who were held 0-0 by Duncans United, guaranteeing that Falmouth cannot finish lower than second in the zone after the completion of the first round.
Meanwhile, the race for the top two spots in Zone A remains tight with five points separating the top four teams with two games still to go; Meadforest leads with 25 points, one more than Lime Hall; Baptist Alliance are third on 21 and Spanish Town Police fourth on 20, one point ahead of Tru-Juice .
At Llandilo, Kamali Powell and Shanoy Anderson scored their first goals of the season as Falmouth picked up a league-leading ninth win and raced to 29 points.
Powell opened the scoring in the 14th minute but Yasser Bacchus equalised for the home team in the 44th minute before Anderson, who came into the game as a second half substitute in the 75th minute, scored the winner a minute into time added.
The loss left Reno, a semi-finalist last year, in trouble as they are third on 19 points, five behind Treasure Beach who can qualify in the next game.
Meadforest held on to the top spot in Zone A as the league top-scorer Raheem Porter’s brace carried them to a 3-1 win over 10-man Progressive at Carder Park.
Porter gave Meadforest the lead in the 29th minute and added a second four minutes into extra time at the end of the first half while Justin Johnson made it 3-0 in the 54th minute.
Progressive were reduced to 10 players in the 81st minute when Shavarie Walker was sent off while O’Brien Reid scored a consolation goal in the 89th minute.
Lime Hall kept pace with the leaders after a 2-1 win over Portlanders at Lynch Park, with Tahjae Sharpe scoring the first goal of the game in the 38th minute. Cardiff McKenzie levelled for Portlanders just before half-time before Ronaldo Brown scored the winner in the 71st minute.
Both Spanish Town Police and Tru Juice missed a big chance when they ended 0-0 at Dinthill Technical but Baptist Alliance are still in the middle of the race with a 4-2 win over Grays Inn at St Mary’s Sports Complex.
Ackeem Reid scored a double for Baptist Alliance while Orlando Ricketts and Kevin Kenton also scored while Davian Davis and Rasheed Dennis also scored for Grays Inn.
