Cocktails With Michelle Lovelace
Wardrobe Consultant
Style Observer (SO): How did you become a celebrity stylist?
Michelle Lovelace (ML:) I worked in retail with top luxury brands and made good use of social media.
SO: What has been your most memorable experience as a stylist?
ML: An A-list celebrity contacted me to secure a couple of coveted Hermès bags in a short time span and I got flown out to deliver them.
SO: Have you ever disappointed a client?
ML: Yes! I was styling a client for the Grammys and the suit got mixed up with another package so we had to make do with what we had. In the end it turned out great, but it was not the original plan.
SO: There has been quite a bit of negative buzz of late over the acquisition of the coveted Birkin. Long wait time, the unavailability in stores, having to purchase a myriad of other items to even qualify for particular ones and then of course the Walmart Birkin! As someone who has quite a collection what’s your take?
ML: I honestly think nothing good comes easy. A lot of these brands plunge because of how accessible they have become.
SO: Which fashion show have you attended recently?
ML: The last fashion show I attended was Marni 23. To be honest, I don’t do fashion shows; they are very chaotic. While the experience is cool and aesthetically pleasing, I like private and more exclusive showings.
SO: Who’s your preferred designer?
ML: Definitely Louis Vuitton. It’s the story behind the brand: A young boy who believed in himself and went all-out to succeed.
SO: Based on your clients’ requests, what are the in-demand labels?
ML: Hermès and Louis Vuitton (collabs).
SO: Why do you think this is?
ML: They are not the most accessible items to secure.
SO: What, in your opinion, is the next best thing in fashion?
ML: Vintage! What’s old is new. Styles are coming back where people rarely have to shop; they are simply popping out old pieces.
SO: How do you stay relevant?
ML: Staying in the know and having a heavy presence on social media.
SO: A spa retreat or a shopping trip?
ML: If the budget is large — shopping trip.
SO: Which song is currently playing in your head?
ML: Drake –
Nokia
SO:
What’s caught your fancy on the bar cocktail menu?
ML: The Stormy Valley made with Appleton Estate Signature.
SO:Were you invited to speak to a room of fashion enthusiasts, which five things would you stress?
ML: Marketing, keeping up with trends, knowing the who’s who, relationship-building, and what audience you want to target.
SO:What would Michelle Lovelace say to her younger self?
ML: You are destined for greatness. Set yourself up for disappointment. Never give up. Everything pays off in the end.
SO: Finally, what gets you out of bed each morning?
ML: The drive to keep doing better, and my family.
