Bail extended for man who failed to deliver vehicles
KINGSTON, Jamaica — An elderly man, who is currently before the court for failing to deliver vehicles despite collecting payments from two parties, had his bail extended when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday.
Lester Stevens is charged with two counts of fraudulent conversion and non-delivery of goods or services on the contracted date.
“Promises were made that were not kept. When will they be kept?” presiding Judge Wilson asked when Stevens’ matter was called up in court.
His attorney told the court that a deposit had been made and that the vehicle was expected to arrive in Jamaica within 21 days. The defence requested an additional three months to fulfil the agreement.
However, Judge Wilson pointed to clause two of the contract, which stated that the vehicle should have been delivered by the last day of March— a deadline that was missed.
Turning to the two complainants, Wilson asked if they were willing to give Stevens more time. Both agreed, prompting the judge to remark that they were “drinking the Kool-Aid”.
Judge Wilson highlighted that the delay has had a financial impact on the complainants, who are both without vehicles.
Stevens has paid $400,000 and an additional $5,000 for transportation in restitution so far. He is to pay an outstanding $205,000.
He will return to court on June 20. His bail was extended to allow time for the vehicles to be imported and transferred to one of the complainants.
Presiding Judge Peter Wilson warned him to use the time to follow through on his contract.
