Food Awards judge Mala Morrison visits Tava Indian Fusion
I am a foodie who frequently visits restaurants upstairs at the Progressive Shopping Centre in Barbican to eat with friends, yet when another friend of mine recommended Tava Indian Fusion, I had no idea it was right under my feet on the ground floor.
I had the pleasure of hosting an overseas business associate recently, and decided to try it with an open mind, notwithstanding that I do already have some favourite Indian places in town. The interior has a dark palette, yet fairly modern with a mix of cultural elements — a striking peacock mural and mirrored alcoves framed with copper coloured fretwork.
While browsing the menu I had a Saffron Fizzy Gin cocktail, which was a little on the sweet side but pretty refreshing and unique in flavour. Our appetisers did not take long to arrive, starting the meal on a savoury note, with the tandoori stuffed mushrooms. This is a favourite appetiser of mine and Tava did not disappoint. They were infused with the right balance of spices, stuffed with a creamy blend of cheese, and herbs, and had that smoky flavour from the tandoor oven, served alongside a refreshing mint sauce for an added zing.
Next up was the Non-Veg Platter that had a combination of grilled kebabs and accompanying sauces. The malai kebabs were incredibly tender and marinated in a creamy mixture of yogurt and spices grilled with a slight char. The seekh kebab made from finely minced meat seasoned with a blend of spices similar to a sausage, grilled on skewers. These kebabs had a crisp exterior while remaining juicy on the inside and served with a side of tangy sauce.
The cilantro chicken tikka offered a refreshing flavour with a green marinade, which was loaded with fresh cilantro and spices. The chicken pieces were tender and flavourful, making this dish a standout for anyone looking for a unique take on traditional tikka.
For those who enjoy a bit of heat, the chicken chilli milli also did not disappoint! Combining spicy and savoury elements, this skewer featured succulent chicken tossed in a chilli-based sauce that was both flavourful and fiery. The chicken korma was simmered in a creamy, mildly spiced sauce with a fragrant blend of spices, nuts, and coconut. The korma is perfect for pairing with naan, so we ordered two kinds — garlic and butter, both of which were fluffy, soft. I had no room for dessert, but instead I opted for a second cocktail — a Rose Lychee Martini, and enjoyed the ambiance after our meal.
Overall, Tava Indian Fusion delivered a great first experience. The service was actually pretty good, the staff attended to our table when necessary and were knowledgeable about the menu. I found the prices were also reasonable landing our bill approximately $15,000 inclusive of food, cocktails and taxes.
I would definitely return to try the Masala Lobster and Chilli Fried Whole fish, which both caught my eye on the menu. Whether you’re a fan of Indian food or trying it for the first time, I think Tava Indian Fusion is worth a visit.
