Ministry mourns loss of journalist Alecia Smith
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information is joining the media fraternity in mourning the passing of Alecia Nicole Edwards Smith, a beloved journalist and former team member of the Jamaica Observer and Jamaica Information Service (JIS), who passed on Tuesday, after a period of illness.
Reflecting on her passing, Portfolio Minister Dr Dana Morris Dixon said, “Alecia was more than a reporter, she was a storyteller who saw humanity behind every headline. Her words helped us understand not just what was happening in our country, but why it mattered. We are deeply saddened by her passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues at the Jamaica Observer, and the wider media community.”
The ministry highlighted Smith’s journey as “one marked by passion, professionalism and purpose”.
“In 2008, Alecia joined the JIS and quickly became a trusted voice in government communications. For 14 years, she dedicated herself to keeping Jamaicans informed about policies, programmes and public services— crafting stories that brought clarity, understanding and insight into the workings of government. Whether reporting from the field, writing features or proofreading critical releases, Alecia’s work was marked by accuracy, empathy and excellence,” the statement said.
It lauded her contributions which it said have left an indelible mark on national archives.
“The stories she wrote now serve as reference points for students, researchers, policymakers, and the next generation of journalists. Her ability to capture the voices of both authority figures and everyday citizens helped to bridge the gap between [the] government and the people it serves.”
The ministry called attention to her legacy, stating: “Her pen may be still but the impact of her work continues to speak— eloquently, powerfully and with purpose. May her soul rest in peace, and may her contributions continue to inspire.”
