Man fined $4k for ‘birthday’ ganja
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A man was ordered to pay a fine of $4,000 or face 30 days in prison when he appeared before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday for possession of 14.52 ounces of ganja, which he claimed was intended for his upcoming birthday celebration.
Jerome Williams told the court he was “guilty with explanation” to which presiding Judge Peter Wilson responded, “What were you doing with 14 ounces of ganja?”
“My birthday was coming up,” Williams explained. “When I keep birthday parties, I buy things that come in glass bottles.”
The judge and Williams engaged in a back-and-forth dialogue, during which Judge Wilson suggested a fine of $14,000, equating to $1,000 per pound. Williams, however, pleaded with the judge, stating he did not have that amount of money.
He was eventually sentenced to pay $4,000 or serve 30 days in prison.
