KSAMC mourns passing of veteran journalist Alecia Smith
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) and mayor Councillor Andrew Swaby are expressing deep sorrow over the passing of senior reporter Alecia Smith.
In a statement on Wednesday, the KSAMC described Smith as a respected member of Jamaica’s journalism fraternity, serving the industry for 14 years. Noting her integrity and professionalism, it acknowledged her coverage of Parliament and the Office of the Prime Minister, has helped to connect citizens with key national decisions.
Throughout her career, Smith also reported on media events hosted by the KSAMC, council meetings, and civic activities, keeping the public informed about local government affairs.
“She was admired not only for her journalistic skills, but also for the grace, warmth, and strength she brought to her work. Her dedication to storytelling upheld the vital role of a free press in Jamaica’s democracy,” the KSAMC said.
“As a woman in the demanding field of journalism, Smith exemplified resilience and excellence, inspiring younger female journalists to pursue their craft with courage and determination.”
The KSAMC has joined the media community, Smith’s family, and friends in mourning her loss and has extended heartfelt condolences.
“May her soul rest in eternal peace,” the statement concluded.
