Oyala Oyala takes lead in JIC Classic
IRONSHORE, St James— Colombian Robigzon Leandro Oyala Oyala, of Team Medellin is confident he can win the fourth staging of the Jamaican International Cycling Classic that ends today after the third stage from Montego Bay to Duncans, Trelawny and back.
Oyala Oyala, who was eighth overall in last year’s staging, won Saturday’s second leg, Montego Bay to Discovery Bay in St Ann and back, covering 114 kilometres, and took over the overall lead in the general classification.
Team Nu Colombian are still the team leaders, ahead of G-Flow of Belize with Team Medellin, last year’s winners, in third place, with one stage to go.
Yesterday, Oyala Oyala told the Jamaica Observer that he was confident going into today’s final stage. “Yes, it is very possible that I will win the stage Sunday, I felt very good about today’s stage,” he said.
Oyala Oyala said he had the edge on the climbs on Saturday. “The guys that won (Friday) they really wanted to win and that helped me to win today.”
The 34-year-old rider who was second on Friday, won yesterday’s stage in 2:37.43 seconds, just ahead of Belizean Jyven Gonzalez of Team G-Flow, 2:37.47 seconds, with Friday’s stage winner Jonathan Alexander Guatibonza Becerra of Nu Colombian third with 2:37.49 seconds.
Oyala Oyalla leads with an accumulated time of 5:25.25 seconds, followed by Guatibonza Becerra with 5:25.27 seconds, while Gonzalez, who was 19th on Friday, is in third place with 5:25.35 seconds, just ahead of his teammate Derrick Chaverria, who was third on Friday.
Andrew Ramsey of AVR Racing was in 12th place with a time of 5:25.41 seconds, the top Jamaican rider, Jaequan Dixon of Elevation Cycling, was in 32nd place, and Damaine Douglas of Global Cycling was in 39th place while Colombian Matteo Garcia Castaneda of the St James-based team Cornwall Cycling Team was sixth overall.
Fifty-five riders will start today after another three abandoned the event on Saturday and six more failed to meet the time requirements.
