Danielle Williams becomes first Jamaican Grand Slam champion
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Danielle Williams became the first Jamaican to win a Grand Slam track title after winning the 100m in the women’s short hurdles event and collected a whopping US$100,000 (J$15.7m) at the National Stadium on Sunday.
Williams came into the event on eight points for her second in the 100m hurdles on Friday but looked very much like a 100m sprinter as she high knee-lifted to 11.54 for first and collected 12 massive points and 20 overall.
American Tia Jones, who came into the event with 12 points, could only finish sixth in 12.26 and got three points, which took her to 15 points and made her second overall, and she will get US$50,000.
Jamaica’s second competitor, Ackera Nugent, was second in the 100m flat in 11.57 and finished third overall with 13 points and collected US$30,000.
Jasmin Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico was third in the 100m in 11.73 and fourth overall with 12 points and US$25,000.
Deniisha Wright of the Bahamas was fifth overall with eight points and US$20,000 after finishing fourth in the 100m in 11.74 and was sixth in the 100m hurdles.
