MP urges parents to monitor children’s use of tablets
PORT MARIA, St Mary — Member of Parliament for St Mary Central Dr Morais Guy has appealed to adults to monitor their children’s use of electronic devices. The comments came as he handed over 52 computer tablets to young students at the early childhood, primary and secondary levels to assist in their online learning.
“The children might be tempted to go on sites that are not necessarily appropriate for them. I want you to keep a keen eye on them and to ensure that they go on the right educational sites,” the MP urged during the recent handover of tablets.
Dr Guy also encouraged guardians who are not technologically up-to-date to get help from their young charges if they are interested in using the tablets.
“It’s for the children and if you want to use it, let the children show you how to use it. If you want to set up an e-mail, let them show you,” he told parents present at the donation ceremony held at his constituency office.
“Each one teach one. There was a time when parents where teaching children; now it’s the children teaching the parents about the technology. You can give a child a phone, they can show you all sort of features that you might not be aware of,” Dr Guy added as he explained why he thought it important to provide the children in his constituency with the devices.
He pointed out that when COVID-19 pushed classes online, some children were left behind as their households could not afford to purchase the devices.
“We looked at those children who were most in need and the Universal Service Fund programme allocated a sum to each constituency,” Guy told recipients.
According to the MP, he has long recognised the value of access to education and he has therefore made it an integral part of the work being done in St Mary Central.
