In St Andrew Eastern, Cuthbert-Flynn rallies support for JLP third term
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) spokesperson Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn has reaffirmed her confidence in the leadership of the ruling party while praising the Andrew Holness-led Administration’s achievements and calling for continued support to secure a third term in office.
Speaking at a JLP Area Council meeting in St Andrew Eastern on Sunday, Cuthbert-Flynn commended the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Finance Minister Fayval Williams for her recent budget presentation which she described as “clinical” and effective.
“You have an excellent Member of Parliament in Fayval Williams, the Honourable Fayval Williams,” she said, adding that her speech in Parliament left the Opposition scrambling.
“They never thought that, and when the leader of the opposition jumped up … he had to jump up and say ‘on a point of order,’ and he had no point of order. He was out of order,” she added with a laugh.
Cuthbert-Flynn, who is also state minister of national security and MP for St Andrew West Rural, criticised the Opposition for its economic management, claiming that the People’s National Party (PNP) has a history of deficit budgets.
“They (the Opposition) are a party that cannot balance the budget… pure deficit, and we do not want that,” she said.
She pointed to the work being done across the 63 constituencies under the JLP government, stating, “That is why we got a second term, and we have continued to work.”
Highlighting recent infrastructure developments, Cuthbert-Flynn pointed to the construction of a new hospital in Spanish Town and a seven-storey building at the University of the West Indies (UWI) as examples of the government’s commitment to national progress. She contrasted this with the PNP’s tenure, stating, “The PNP did nothing for eighteen and a half years and they want to come back and do what? To mash up the country.”
She further defended the government’s fiscal management, referencing a recent statement by Opposition Leader Mark Golding.
“When we were paying down on our debt, yuh hear weh dem say? Markie G come out and say ease off a little bit and give out things. That is not what we do as a government. We made sure that we are paying down on our debt, and now this month we’re gonna be at 68 per cent.”
Encouraging voter participation, Cuthbert-Flynn urged constituents to ensure their names are on the voters’ list before the registration deadline.
“I want a third term so I can continue to do the good work of this government. To the people of St Andrew Eastern, I am going to ask you… tomorrow is the last day to enumerate, so get out the people—all the people that turn 18, all the people who have not been on the voters’ list—get them out because we want to ensure that we get that third term,” she said.
She concluded with a firm statement: “We aren’t built on lies. We have been putting in the work.”
