Monday is likely final day to register to vote in upcoming general election
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaicans are being reminded that Monday, March 31, is likely the final day for voter registration for the next general election.
The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) warns that individuals who apply after the March 31 deadline will have to wait for inclusion on the November 30 voters’ list. Only those listed on the official voters’ list will be allowed to vote in the general elections.
The next general election is constitutionally due by September this year.
The EOJ opened its constituency offices on Saturday, March 29, to provide an additional opportunity for individuals who are unable to visit EOJ offices during regular weekday hours to register before today’s deadline.
“Registration is free of charge, and applicants are asked to wear bright or dark-coloured clothing (avoiding white or light colours) to facilitate the process of taking their photograph. Following the in-office application, a team from the EOJ will visit the applicant’s residence to verify his/her address to complete the registration process,” the EOJ noted.
To qualify for voter registration, individuals must be at least 18 years old, be a Jamaican citizen or a Commonwealth citizen who has resided in Jamaica for at least 12 months and reside ordinarily in Jamaica.
Persons who are already registered do not need to reapply.
