Thursday the safest day for Jamaican road users, Wednesday the worst
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Thursday has by far been the safest day of the year for Jamaican road users, with just five fatalities from four fatal crashes since the start of the year.
This is according to statistics provided by the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) for the week ending Friday, March 28.
By contrast, Wednesday has been the most deadly day with 20 fatalities from 20 fatal crashes. Sunday comes next with at least 19 deaths from 13 fatal crashes. Four of those deaths resulted from this morning’s fatal crash along the PJ Patterson Highway. Two females and two males, including an eight-year-old minor perished in the collision which took place about 12:30am.
Saturday comes next with 15 fatalities from 15 fatal crashes; Monday has 13 deaths from 13 fatal crashes; while Tuesday and Friday have recorded 10 fatal crashes and 10 deaths each since the start of the year.
Meanwhile, at least 92 people have been killed in 83 fatal crashes since the start of the year. The ITA said fatalities have decreased by 17 per cent when compared to prior year while fatal crashes are down 12 per cent as at March 28.
Among those killed this year are 24 motorcyclists, 23 pivate motor vehicle drivers, 20 pedestrians and nine private motor vehicle passengers.
Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists and pillion passengers) account for 59 per cent of all fatalities combined since the start of the year.
Overall, passengers account for 18 per cent of the fatalities, with males making up 81 per cent of victims and females 19 per cent.
