Who? Tyrone Edwards
Anchor of etalk, Canada’s #1 entertainment news show broadcasting nationwide weeknights at 7:00 pm on CTV
How his Jamaican roots helped in his success… ‘Broughtupsy’, ‘Mannahs’, love & respect — these are key Jamaican principles that have allowed me to present myself properly and navigate this game.
An example of how his broughtupsy has helped his career..
.On a film festival red carpet some years ago I had the opportunity to interview Denzel Washington. As he approached, I shook his wife’s hand first and said, “Good evening, Mrs Washington.” Would you believe dat likkle bit a mannahs mek Denzel rate mi til dis day!!!
His parents are… Josephine Roach and Maxwell Edwards from May Pen, Clarendon and MoBay and Spanish Town.
His summers were spent… between May Pen and Meadowbrook.
His last red carpet gig was… Sunday, March 2, 2025 during the 97th Oscars Awards in Los Angeles, California.
There he copped interviews with… Colman Domingo, Ava Duvernay, Halle Berry, Cynthia Erivo, Scarlett Johansson, Best Actor 2025 winner Adrien Brody.
Behind-the-scenes Oscars preparations… Walking onto the Oscars red carpet for the third year in a row, I felt the most prepared I’ve ever felt: getting a start on a lot of these movies from their early press screenings at the Toronto Film Festival and streaming from every possible service available. I also made a point of watching as many of the films in theatre as possible; there’s still something still unmatched about experiencing a movie that way!
The comfort and confidence I find on the red carpet mostly comes from… Participating in as many of the awards season’s red carpets as possible: I consider the shows leading up to the Oscars as regular season games and the Oscars the championships. So by the time I get to the Oscars in March, I’m in top form.
His most memorable red carpet interview to date… The 2023 Oscars red carpet was my first, ever! I was scheduled to be there in 2021 but couldn’t make it because of travel restrictions and testing positive for COVID in 2022 — that’s also the year I got the world exclusive interview with Rihanna.
I also spoke on that carpet to Kate Hudson about her love of beef patties and Ting!
On getting a star to stop and speak… It’s different for every person, but I rely on knowing my content and being present so I can play off of whatever’s happening in the moment — and things are moving quickly on a red carpet so it’s a dance. #TheArtOfTheRedCarpet
Typical ice-breakers… Lead with love. The red carpet is a celebratory event so I celebrate their efforts first.
Also, fashion is a great place to start: “Love your dress! Show it off for our cameras, please!”
His start in media… DIY — Dweet yuhself! I say that because I auditioned a few times over the years and didn’t get the job. Then I started my own blog in 2009. It blew up in popularity and that’s when they saw my comfort on camera and called me to come in! That was December 2010 — Give God the glory!
On staying relevant… I think my relevance continues to grow through the love of the arts and the respect that I have for my craft. I’m always interested in becoming a newer and improved version of myself as a man, and that directly impacts my craft. The better I become as a person, the better I am at my job!
His competitive advantage… My advantage is living my dream; I wanted this job since I was 13 years old. Also, I just love people and I’m in the business of listening to and then presenting people who are doing outstanding work.
On his sense of style… Fashion, for me, is what you wear and style is how you wear it.
On his favourite thing to do in Jamaica… Go for a drive with my dad because I know that includes many stops, good food and nuff laughs!
Favourite things to eat and drink on the island… Escoveitch fish, jelly coconut, guinep and soursop…
Favourite old-school reggae song…
Redemption Song by Bob Marley because the lyrics are an excerpt from a speech Marcus Garvey gave in ‘37 in Canada.
On a long drive to country (be it Canada or Ja) the songs playing are… Garnett Silk:
Splashing Dashing; Beres Hammond:
Doctor’s Orders; Dennis Brown:
Revolution; Bob Marley:
Rainbow Country; The Maytals:
It Must be True Love.
Words he lives by… In the spaces you occupy, contribute the type of energy you want to receive… And, always, One Love!
