Koulie pays homage to Barrington Levy’s 1970s classic Shaolin Temple
US-based reggae singer Koulie recently released a new single titled Shaolin Temple.
The song, which samples some of the lyrics and the melody from Barrington Levy’s 1970s release which carries the same title, was released on March 6.
“I was inspired by the legendary Barrington Levy to record this one, Shaolin Temple is a one-of-a-kind song. The lyrics are thought-provoking, and the rhythm makes you feel like skanking all night. From the first time I heard this song I felt inspired to record a new version. So, I got the rhythm and used the melody and wrote some new lyrics and recorded it,” said Koulie.
The artiste says he’s pleased with the response that Shaolin Temple has received since it was released.
“The people appreciate the nostalgia and the classic vibes that it brings. Listening to it is like taking a trip down memory lane for the older folks, and it’s a fresh new vibe for the youths,” he said.
This is the second classic reggae song that Koulie has reworked. Late last year he recorded and released a version of Jacob Miller’s Rockers, featuring Sizzla.
“I like to pay homage to the living legends in reggae and the ones that have transitioned. So don’t be surprised when you hear me do a version of another great Jamaican song. The world may want to try and forget how special reggae music is, and what it has done for the people; however, it is I duty to remind them so they will never forget. I will always love the blessed island of Jamaica and give honour to the forefathers of this reggae groundation! Righteous,” he said.
Koulie is currently busy in the studios working on several new projects that he plans to release soon.
