JC’s Edwards says stadium atmosphere provided spark for long jump triumph
Michael-Andre Edwards of Jamaica College (JC) turned in a good performance to win the Boys’ Class One long jump during the ISSA/GraceKennedy Athletics Championships at the National Stadium on Wednesday.
Edwards leapt 7.75m to win the event quite comfortably ahead of Peterfield’s Svein Lawrence (7.25m) and Tonies King from St Mary’s High School (7.14m).
Edwards says it was a very difficult win because he felt sick before the start of the final.
“It was a hard victory because I am very sick as I got the flu [on Wednesday]. And I [have] still not recovered and so I don’t know how I did it, but the crowd gave me a lot of energy,” Edwards said.
Kingston College’s (KC’s) Amani Phillips captured the gold medal in the Boys’ Class Two long jump final with a leap of 7.15m. St Elizabeth Technical High School’s Rodeeki Walters took the silver medal on his final attempt with a jump of 7.09m, while Excelsior High’s Michael Graham took home the bronze with a mark of 7.02.
Jamaica College’s Joseph Salmon will be looking for back-to-back discus throw gold medals after he led the qualifying rounds in the final of the event with a throw of 54.86m. Salmon, who has dominated the event this season, will receive stiff competition from Munro College’s Rajeem Street, who had a personal best of 54.69m. KC’s Dylan Logan is next with 54.26m.
Kingston College will have two men in the final as Daijon Budhai also advanced with 52.59m, followed by Rajay Hemmings of St Catherine High with 51.35m and Delon Smith of Calabar with 51.22m.
St Jago High’s Nikaro Johnson; Munro’s pair of Selethel Johnson and Ainsworth Ferguson; along with KC’s Stesaen Hurd; and Zackery Nisbett from Manchester topped all qualifiers for the final of the boys’ Class Two high jump competition. The other qualifiers for the final are Calabar’s Richard Green, and Wolmer’s Boys’ Roshane Francis.
