Dockery clocks PB to comfortably claim Girls’ Class One 100m top spot
SABRINA Dockery of Lacovia High ran a personal best 11.07 seconds (0.8m/s) — the second-fastest time ever for a girl at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Athletics Championships — to win the Class One 100m on the second day of the five-day spectacle.
On a day when false starts killed the dreams of several athletes Dockery got off to a lightning start, and after 30 metres it was a procession to the finishing line as she improved her lifetime best from the 11.12 seconds which she set on Tuesday. Her effort on Wednesday’s final was the second-fastest time ever at this level, only behind Alana Reid’s superb national junior record 10.92 set in 2023.
Her time also improved her World Under-20 leading mark.
Holmwood Technical’s Doniellia Lewis was second in 11.43 while Edwin Allen’s Renecia Edwards was third in 11.54.
As expected, Lacovia High’s Shanoya Douglas won the Girls’ Class Two 100m race in 11.32 seconds (-0.3m/s), the second-fastest time ever. For the victory, Douglas caught the fast-starting Natrece East (11.59) of Wolmer’s Girls’. Adora Campbell of St Jago High took third with 11.66.
St Jago High’s Shannia Campbell won the Class Three gold medal with 11.62 (0.0m/s), finishing ahead of Shayon Smith of Vere Technical, who clocked 11.82, and Rihanna Scott (also 11.82) of Ferncourt High.
Holmwood Technical’s Adalia Simpson, who led the qualification for the semi-finals, won the Class Four gold medal with a time of 12.13 (0.2m/s), beating Vere Technical’s Danae Bartley who ran 12.35. Dehjanae Stephens of St Mary Technical finished third with 12.39.
Alphansus Davis High’s Alikay Reynolds made a winning start to her Class Two campaign at the Boys’ and Girls’ Championships after securing the 1500m gold medal, running 4:41.29 minutes.
Reynolds, who won in Class Three last year, upset the favourite Jovi Rose (4:42.71) of Holmwood Technical who repeated her silver medal performance from last year. Rihanna Morgan of Hydel High took the bronze medal with 4:43.81.
There was also an upset in the Class One final when Taiefa Gowe of Hydel High, who was fifth last year, ran 4:37.34 to beat last year’s silver medallist Cindy Rose (4:38.22) of Holmwood Technical. Ashara Frater of Vere Technical was third in 4:38.56.
Edwin Allen’s Denique Palmer, who led after the preliminaries, won the Class Three gold medal with 4:44.44, beating Sydney Pagon’s Alexia Palmer (4:46.89) while Shameika Dennis of STETHS took the bronze with 4:47.89.
Defending champions Edwin Allen High and Holmwood Technical are tied for the lead on 49 points after eight finals; St Jago High are third with 29 points, followed by Hydel High on 24 points and Wolmer’s Girls’ fifth with 18 points.
Hydel and Holmwood are well set to score heavily in Thursday’s finals of the Girls’ 400m as they will be well represented in all three finals.
Hydel’s Abigail Campbell is on course to retain her Class One gold medal after she led the qualifying with 53.30, ahead of Edwin Allen’s KellyAnn Carr who is expected to be her main challenger.
Holmwood are also well represented with the pair of Abrina Wright, who ran 54.24, and Kristen Herbert who clocked 54.39.
