An enjoyable evening was had at the Windrush Gardens of the British High Commission in New Kingston on Thursday, March 20 for an exclusive screening of the United Kingdom (UK) National Theatre’s production of Small Island.
The acclaimed stage adaptation of the award-winning novel by author Andrea Levy told the intertwined stories of Jamaican and British individuals during and after World War II, exploring themes of migration, identity, and belonging. The event not only celebrated the enduring cultural and historical ties between Jamaica and the UK, but also honoured the legacy of the Windrush Generation.
British High Commissioner to Jamaica Judith Slater highlighted that legacy in her opening remarks, emphasising the importance of the evening’s proceedings. “This evening is more than just a film screening; it is a celebration of the Windrush Generation’s resilience, achievements, and their lasting contributions to both our nations. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the challenges they faced, including the injustices of the Windrush scandal,” Slater said. “The UK Government remains committed to righting past wrongs and strengthening its engagement with those affected through the appointment of a new Windrush commissioner.”
