Legacy Isle proves classy in $1.25-m Omar Walker Trophy
As predicted, Legacy Isle, trained by Rohan Crichton, dominated the competition in the $1.25-million Omar Walker Trophy feature on Saturday’s nine race card.
Ridden by Tevin Foster, the five-year-old American-bred bay horse showcased his exceptional class and talent with a convincing four-and three-quarter-length victory in the Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over five furlongs (1,000m) on the round course.
Legacy Isle got a good break and at the off, quickly took command and led the field into the half-mile turn. Chocomo (Robert Halledeen), Joy Is Golden (Shavon Townsend), and Supremasi (Shane Ellis) trailed closely behind.
As the field turned for home, Legacy Isle, under a firm hold, maintained a brisk pace. Chocomo attempted to challenge, but when Foster gave Legacy Isle a bit more rein, the Shackleford offspring accelerated, powering to an easy victory in 1:00.1 (24.2 x 48.0) minutes. Chocomo took second, with Supremasi finishing third.
Anthony Nunes continued to hold a firm grip on the lead in the trainers’ standing with two winners on the day. Nunes saddled
Perfect Affair (Reyan Lewis) in the first race and Battle Angel (Dick Cardenas) in the very next race.
Racing continues today with a 10-race card starting at noon.
