In memory of Ralph James
Dear Editor,
I write to honour the memory of Roland Ralph James, a distinguished Anglican, whose influence has left an indelible mark on our communities.
Uncle Ralph, as he was affectionately called by some of us who knew him, was an accomplished businessman, philanthropist, Christian, and a devoted champion for education who enriched the lives of many, particularly in Treasure Beach and Mandeville.
James embodied the spirit of community service and dedication to education. His tireless commitment to supporting students, especially those attending Church Teachers’ College in Mandeville, highlights a legacy built on the belief that education is the cornerstone of a thriving community. His generosity provided countless young individuals with the means to pursue their academic dreams, shaping future leaders who will carry forth his vision of empowerment.
Reflecting on his visionary contributions, I am reminded of the transformation he brought to Mandeville. One notable chapter in our local history involves the development of the property near the Mandeville Regional Hospital, where he proposed a location for the Mandeville Market — a suggestion that was initially met with resistance. Many might recall my late mother, Pearl Hylton Griffiths, a member of the Brooks family, whose cousin Stanley Brooks, a former businessman and mayor, who voiced concerns about relocating the market. In contrast, James recognised the potential of the land he offered, which now boasts the Golf View Hotel and shopping plazas, demonstrating his foresight and commitment to developing Mandeville into a more vibrant and accessible community.
It is a poignant irony that while the Mandeville Market remains an eyesore, James’s vision has flourished. His legacy is not only reflected in the physical development of our town but also in the countless lives he touched through his philanthropy and unwavering support.
To his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, and extended family, please accept my heartfelt condolence. Your loss is shared by many who benefited from James’s kindness and vision. May you find comfort in the cherished memories you hold and in the knowledge that his legacy will live on through the lives he transformed and the community he so greatly impacted.
In this time of sorrow, may you feel surrounded by love and support as you honour the life of a remarkable man.
