Herbert Morrison leads JBSB first round
Herbert Morrison Technical High School won the first round of Jamaica’s Best School Band (JBSB) Competition, which started on March 13 at Dinthill High School in St Catherine.
The St James institution’s 15-member band finished with a maximum 15 points to top five rivals. Those were Dinthill, last year’s champion, which accumulated 47 points, with Prospect College from St Ann third on 43 points. Denbigh High School from Clarendon finished fourth with 42 points, earning them a spot in the next round.
Eliminated were newcomers American International School of Kingston (AISK) on 37 points, and Cornwall College out of St James, which recorded 31 points.
Their performances were judged by Stephen Stewart and Kamar Forrest.
“The bands did mostly reggae, we heard a lot of reggae, like Chronixx and Romain Virgo. AISK was the most eclectic; they played some pop songs,” said Rayven Armani, founder of the JBSB.
The next round is scheduled for March 20 at St Catherine High School, who are former champions. They host last year’s runners-up and former champions St Mary High School, Alphansus High School from Clarendon, Camperdown High School from Kingston, and Holmwood Technical High School out of Manchester.
AISK, Prospect College, St Jago High School, and Holmwood Technical are newcomers.
Over $1 million in cash and prizes will be awarded for the JBSB’s 12th season. This is courtesy of co-sponsors Vinyl Record Collectors Association; CB Facey Foundation; Music Mart; Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport.
