How Cook Shops Bring Jamaica Together: The Best Chick-Endz Showdown
Every day, Jamaican cook shops welcome people from all walks of life, serving as unofficial community centres where the aroma of traditional dishes brings together Jamaicans regardless of social standing. In both urban centres and rural parishes, these establishments represent a uniquely Jamaican culinary tradition that unites rather than divides. It’s this cultural significance that The Best Chick-Endz competition, launched by The Best Dressed Chicken, aims to celebrate as it searches for Jamaica’s finest cook shop chicken dishes.
“We’re thrilled to launch The Best Chick-Endz campaign as a celebration of authentic Jamaican cuisine and the cook shops that are the heartbeat of our communities,” says Arielle Oliver, brand manager at The Best Dressed Chicken. “These establishments represent the true spirit of Jamaica, where our locally sourced chicken becomes part of dishes that bring people together across all walks of life. This competition isn’t just about finding the best food — it’s about highlighting the cultural institutions that make Jamaican cuisine special and positioning The Best Dressed Chicken as the go-to poultry partner for food lovers across the island.”
The competition begins with public nominations on The Best Dressed Chicken’s
Instagram page (@bestdressedja), where Jamaicans can share the name and location of their favourite cook shops. From these submissions, judges will select six finalists, visiting each location to sample their signature chicken dishes. They’ll evaluate each establishment based on taste, quality of ingredients, proper food handling practices, and whether they offer a proper “full box”— that perfect combination of meat, rice and peas, vegetables, and festival that defines a proper Jamaican meal.
Social media will buzz with activity as food enthusiasts follow the hosts, content creator Mikel Daley (@yaadlifesgood), and The Best Dressed Chicken Marketing Officer Kimone Grant — on their islandwide tour. The public will then have their say in selecting the ultimate winner from the top three finalists.
The stakes are high with substantial prizes: $200,000 prize money, chicken supplies valued at $150,000, and a storefront makeover – a combined value of $500,000 for the winner, with generous second and third-place prizes as well.
For many cook shop owners, this competition represents more than just a chance at prize money — it’s recognition of their vital role in Jamaican culture. Many of these establishments have been passed down through generations, with recipes and techniques carefully preserved from grandparents to grandchildren.
As The Best Chick-Endz competition travels across Jamaica it reminds us all of the power of food. In a nation known for its motto “Out of Many, One People,” perhaps nowhere is this unity more deliciously expressed than in these beloved cook shops, where Jamaica’s diverse heritage comes together on a single plate, served with pride and shared with love.
