Leah Taylor, Project Engineer, Jamaica Energy Partners Group
What is one key change you believe needs to happen — whether in the workplace, community, or society — to create real progress for women, and how can you (or have you) contributed to making it happen?
ONE key change needed in the community to drive real progress for women, especially those interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), is greater exposure to careers in engineering and related fields.
Very often, as women, we are simply not exposed of the vast opportunities available to us in technical industries. Many young girls, including myself, grow up without seeing female engineers, scientists, or renewable energy professionals, which makes it difficult for them to envision themselves in these roles. I believe that early exposure is crucial in breaking down stereotypes and fostering confidence in young women to pursue careers in STEM. Although early in my career, my goal is to contribute to this by actively engaging in outreach programmes, mentoring young women, and sharing my journey to show that engineering is not just a male-dominated field; it is a space where women can thrive and lead. By increasing visibility, providing mentorship, and creating opportunities for hands-on experience, we can change the narrative and ensure that more women feel empowered to step into the world of engineering, innovation, and sustainability.
Real progress begins when we open doors, challenge norms, and show the next generation that their potential is limitless.
Meet Leah
My name is Leah Taylor, and I am a young engineer, from Barbados, passionate about driving sustainable energy solutions in the Caribbean. My academic journey began at The University of the West Indies, Mona, where I pursued a degree in Energy and Environmental Physics with a minor in Renewable Energy Management.
Recognising the need for both technical expertise and strategic leadership, I am now furthering my education with a Master’s in Engineering and Management, specialising in Electrical Power Engineering. Currently, I play a key role in the growth and sustainability of the company’s energy portfolio. My responsibilities include developing and executing medium to large-scale energy projects, driving the company’s growth while advancing the transition to sustainable energy across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
